DMZ Tour

After quite a bit of procrastination about what type of trip to take to the DMZ, and with the main goal being to see the Vinh Moc tunnels, we settled on taking a bus tour. (US$16pp through Diemo Travel). Our expectation wasn’t great with a 6:00am  pick up and 6:00pm return and over 6hr sitting on the bus travelling.

The bus turned out to be a good option on a wet morning and the journey wasn’t to traumatic. Gained a bit more of an understanding of the war abeit  from a North Vietnamese perspective.

Arrived at the site of the Ke Sanh combat base at around 10am in thick fog, similar conditions to which American troops would have faced under enemy fire in the leadup to the Tet offensive, very scary.  Next we visited the Dakong bridge which links part of the original Ho Chi Minh Trail.

After lunch we headed over the Ben Hai River into the old north to Vinh Moc where during the war the village of about 600 dug tunnels underground to protect themselves against the American bombing. This system stretched over 3 levels 9, 15 and 23m underground with numerous entrances some out to the beach and included  small living quarter for families, a kitchen, toilets, a well and a maternity room where a number of babies were born.

In the end a good day and a good way to see the area.
