Tomb Times

While trying to check options for tours out to the tombs west of Hue, a guide off the street corner talked us into going with him around tombs for 5hrs by motorbike, so yes that’s me practising for the next episode of “CHIPS” in the photos.

So before we got too far he had to pump the back tyre of his bike up (we had obviously eaten to much for Tet). So off we went, firstly braving the Hue traffic with Georgia hanging on to the back of my bike. First stop was to an Arena that was used for Elephant v Tiger fights, I read that only 2 elephants were killed as the Tigers were on leashes and had their claws removed.

Next stop was the Tomb of the 4th Emporer Tu Duc, very rustic but still impressive. Next on the road was Minh Mang’s, very serene with ponds and temples etc. The final one we visited was of the last emporor Kahi Dinh (1885-1925) very lavish, built on a hillside with lots of steps for the faithfull to climb and a mix of Asian and European architecture.

The stone figures at the front of all the tombs represents the entourage that accompanied the emperors in life, to also accompany them to the heavens after death.
